Drone hits Pakistan: One dead, three hurt
Peshawar, Aug 8: A Federal Constabulary soldier was killed and three other personnel injured in a drone attack in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack occurred in the Baka Khel area of Bannu district, near the Afghanistan border. The incident occurred in the area of Bannu district. A joint operation between security forces and police is currently underway in the Haved area of Bannu district. A curfew has been imposed to ensure public safety. On Thursday, at least three people were killed and 13 others, including three police personnel, injured in a bomb blast in Wana tehsil in South Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Pakistan has experienced a sharp rise in terrorist attacks since the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) called off its ceasefire with the government in November 2022. (PTI)
Pak forces nab 14, destroy 3 hideouts in KP crackdown
PESHAWAR, Aug 8: Fourteen suspected facilitators linked to a proscribed group were arrested and three militant hideouts destroyed during a joint intelligence-based operation by security forces and police in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, officials said. According to the security officials, the operation was launched in the Howaid and Wazirabad areas of Bannu district. During the operation, 14 alleged facilitators linked to a proscribed group were arrested and three militant hideouts destroyed, they said, without revealing the name of the banned outfit. Five suspected militant locations were also cleared along the Tochi river. A tricycle and two motorcycles were also seized during the raids. The Pakistan Army and local police also carried out joint patrols in Howaid Bazaar and the surrounding areas. (PTI)
Indian student shot dead in Canada; man charged
Ottawa, Aug 8: A 32-year-old man, Jerdaine Foster, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old Indian student in Canada. The arrest was made by Hamilton Police in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on Tuesday. Foster also faces three counts of attempted murder. Randhawa, a second-year physiotherapy student at Mohawk College, was killed by a stray bullet while standing at a bus stop in Hamilton on April 17. She had just exited a bus and was preparing to cross the street after leaving a local gym when she was struck. She later died in the hospital. According to police, the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving at least seven individuals across four vehicles. Shots were exchanged between the vehicles, and at least two firearms were used. Randhawa was not involved in the altercation and was described as an “innocent bystander.” Acting Det-Sgt Daryl Reid stated that Foster was previously known to police and had links to Hamilton, Halton, and Niagara regions, often residing in short-term rentals. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to identify and arrest others involved in the incident. No additional arrests have been made so far. (PTI)
