Shillong’s Independence Day fever yet to sink in
With Monday marking the start of the final run-up to Independence Day, excitement will sweep across Shillong as the city prepares to drape itself in the colours of the national flag.
Government offices, schools and institutions will put the finishing touches on decorations, while shopfronts will brim with tricolour flags, buntings and patriotic merchandise. The sound of marching bands will echo through various localities ahead of the grand parade at Polo Grounds on August 15.
In order to ensure the smooth conduct of the celebrations, police in the state capital have already begun checks as security measures, which are expected to get further tightened in the coming days.
Markets, too, will buzz with people buying flags and decorative items, while schoolchildren will prepare for performances and drills.
From Monday onwards, Shillong will step into the celebratory week—a time when patriotism will fill the air of Shillong, streets will wear a festive look and citizens, both young and old, will come together to mark 2025 Independence Day with pride and joy. But didn’t this “Monday” take a little too long to catch up this time around?
