SHILLONG, Aug 11: A Rs 51-crore skywalk deck is set to be constructed in the scenic Mawkdok Dympep Valley, near Sohra, to enhance the tourist experience.
The project, which is going through the tendering process, will have a 40-meter projection and is expected to start soon.
The project will encompass an area of 0.54 acres, with the pedestrian skywalk deck area proposed to be 2,195 square meters.
The project is part of a larger plan to build luxury hotels in Sohra to accommodate the growing tourist influx.
Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem announced that the city has seen a surge in visitor numbers in recent months, following a decline in tourist arrivals after the murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi by his wife on may 23.
However, the MLA affirmed that Sohra has always been a sought-after destination and continues to attract visitors.
A host of measures are being introduced to enhance the safety of visitors include making it mandatory for visitors to hire local guides. Installation of CCTV cameras at key tourist spots is also on the anvil.
