Seventh man throws explosives at villagers, escapes

MAWKYRWAT, Aug 12: The sixth member of the Bangladeshi international gang involved in the attack at Rongdangai village succumbed to his injuries on Monday night. The criminal, identified as Akram, was caught and assaulted by the mob at Kaithakona village on Monday before being arrested by police.
Akram was the sixth person apprehended in connection with a reported attempt to abduct a local from Rongdangai village.
The group of at least eight intruders reportedly vandalised property in the village before being repelled by locals.
One of the arrested men has been identified as a Bangladesh Police constable.
South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Banraplang Jyrwa on Tuesday said after catching and thrashing the criminal, the locals of Kaithakona village handed him over to the BSF.
Since the criminal had sustained serious injuries, the BSF and personnel from Nonghyllam Police Station rushed him to Maheshkhola PHC. Due to absence of a Medical & Health Officer at the PHC, he was rushed to Khonjoy PHC in an ambulance where he was declared brought dead by the medical officer on duty.
The SP said the body of the deceased was taken to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital on Tuesday for the inquest and post-mortem examination in presence of a magistrate.
Jyrwa said a suo motu case has been registered at Nonghyllam PS and investigation is in progress to ascertain facts and circumstances leading to the incident.
Another criminal throws ‘explosives’ at locals
A seventh member of the Bangladeshi international gang had a lucky escape from the villagers after throwing explosives at them following a chase.
Jyrwa told The Shillong Times that some locals spotted the criminal at Majisora village and attempted to catch him. However, he escaped into the thick forest after hurling two explosives at them.
Jyrwa said one of the explosives exploded but no one was injured. He said the bomb squad has been informed about the incident and they will reach the village on Wednesday to ascertain the type of explosive used by the Bangladeshi criminal.
Immediately after the incident, the police and BSF teams rushed to the area and conducted a massive search with the help of villagers, but were unable to trace him.
BSF felicitates youth for nabbing criminal alone
The BSF on Tuesday lauded the local villagers of Khonjoy area for their role in the hunting and capturing the six Bangladeshi international criminals.
A meeting was held at Khonjoy-B village and as part of the recognition for the villagers cooperation with the security forces, the BSF felicitated Arman D. Marak for single-handedly capturing the first Bangladeshi criminal on August 9.
The BSF also felicitated the headman of Khonjoy-B, Broney D. Marak, headman of Kaithakona village, Edison T. Sangma and headman of Rongdangai village, Jita T. Sangma.
BSF Meghalaya Frontier Inspector General (IG) OP Upadhyay thanked the villagers for their act of courage.
