SHILLONG, Aug 17: Amid continued inaction from both the government and the company tasked with construction of the Shillong-Dawki road project, the KSU-South East Central Circle (KSU-SECC) and the FKJGP-Riwar Circle (FKGJP-RC) took it upon themselves to install Radium Retro Reflective Tapes along the roadside from Laitlyngkot to Mawlieh, under Package 2 of the Shillong-Dawki road project.
KSU-SECC vice president Basuklang War and FKJGP-RC president Evanfield Khonglam said the decision was made in response to the serious negligence shown by the company executing the project, particularly with regard to road safety for commuters.
Despite holding several meetings with both government authorities and the construction company, no visible action was taken to address their concerns, the groups said.
“The company failed to keep the promises made during those meetings. With no sign of responsibility from either side, we had no choice but to take matters into our own hands,” they stated.
They stated that the installation of the reflective tapes was done to ensure the safety of commuters, particularly in the Pynursla Sub-Division, where parts of the road remain in hazardous condition and are vulnerable to landslides.
They have issued a stern warning to the company and the state government, demanding immediate action to improve safety measures along the road.
