SHILLONG, Aug 26: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has dismissed allegations of mismanagement of central assistance under the High-Powered Committee (HPC) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), which he chaired.
The controversy resurfaced after Leader of Opposition Mukul M. Sangma demanded answers, claiming that the Chief Minister was at the helm of the HPC at a time when Rs 100.71 crore in central funds, released in 2015-16, had allegedly been misappropriated.
The special grant, the first-ever of its kind from the Centre, was intended to support welfare and development initiatives across the Garo Hills.
The Chief Minister initially feigned ignorance about the Special Assistance Grant (SAG), but later countered the allegations, stating that only 60-70% of the total sanctioned amount was actually released by the Government of India and that every rupee received had been duly accounted for.
