SHILLONG, Aug 27: Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Wednesday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment towards the welfare, growth and empowerment of persons with disabilities (PwDs), stressing that they are valued members of the community and they deserve empathy, love and care rather than mere sympathy.
“On my own behalf, and on behalf of the state government, I want to assure you that the government is fully committed to the welfare, well-being and growth of persons with disabilities. We are determined to sustain an ecosystem that treats you as special members of the community with empathy, love and care,” Lyngdoh said while speaking at the Purple Fair held at the Soso Tham Auditorium.
He underscored the importance of going beyond token gestures, urging the society to adopt a more sensitive approach.
“Families and communities must not only show sympathy but, more importantly, empathy. We need to internalise the problems faced by persons with disabilities and do something about them in our own small ways. Each of us can make a difference to this world,” he added.
Highlighting the government’s proactive efforts, Lyngdoh said the Social Welfare Department is working closely with five Union Ministries, including the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. He disclosed that he, along with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, had recently met Union Minister Vijendra Kumar in New Delhi to pursue pending proposals.
“I am happy to announce that things are moving very fast. The state government has proposed and will soon allot 10 acres of land at New Shillong for a permanent building of the Composite Regional Centre (CRC). Out of 10 acres, two acres have been earmarked for the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities to ensure better and closer collaboration with the CRC,” Lyngdoh said.
He further revealed that the proposed Disabled State Stadium, with an estimated cost of over Rs 200 crore, has already taken a definite shape.
“We look forward to seeing persons with various disabilities make use of this sports stadium which has been specially designed for them. The facility will also play a key role when Meghalaya hosts the National Games in 2027,” the Minister said.
In his address, Ramshakla Sahani, Director of Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRCSRE), Shillong, emphasised the importance of such inclusive platforms in raising awareness, promoting empowerment, and showcasing the talents and potential of PwDs.
He acknowledged the continued support of the state government and collaborating institutions in advancing the cause of disability inclusion and rights. Sahani’s address set the tone for a day filled with inspiration, collaboration, and shared purpose.
The CRCSRE Shillong’s proactive initiatives in the disability sector were showcased throughout the event.
The Purple Fair was organised by the CRCSRE, Shillong, in collaboration with the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of Meghalaya.
The fair served as a vibrant platform to celebrate the talents, skills, and entrepreneurial initiatives of PwDs while also fostering dialogue on accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunities.
The event witnessed the participation of around 687 attendees, including 325 PwDs, their families, caregivers, and representatives from NGOs across the region, making it a meaningful and impactful gathering.
Key focus areas included technical and vocational training, access to healthcare and assistive technologies, and rehabilitation services. The state continues to improve physical accessibility in public spaces and transportation, while also extending legal and financial support to ensure that PwDs can live with independence and confidence.
The day-long fair featured diverse and engaging activities, such as awareness sessions, product exhibitions, and demonstrations of assistive devices, handicrafts, talents etc. Various stalls highlighted vocational products, handicrafts, and training opportunities available to PwDs. These interactions served not only to inform but also to inspire attendees and foster connections across communities.
Cultural performances and inclusive sports events were also part of the programme, celebrating creativity, talent, and resilience of PwDs. These moments fostered a spirit of unity and inclusion among all participants.
A key highlight of the event was the participation of Prisca Pyngrope, the Purple Fair Ambassador. A passionate advocate for disability rights, her presence served as a powerful reminder of the impact of visibility and leadership within the disability community. Her message of courage and empowerment deeply resonated with the audience.
In conclusion, the 2nd Purple Fair 2025 was a resounding success—an inspiring blend of policy, participation, and public engagement.
It reinforced the vital role of government and civil society in supporting PwDs and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to fostering a future rooted in inclusivity, dignity, and equality. Through continued collaboration and empowerment, Meghalaya is paving the way for a more accessible and just society for all.
