Washington, Aug 29: President Donald Trump has revoked Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a senior White House official.
Former vice presidents are typically granted federal protection for six months after leaving office, but President Joe Biden had quietly extended Harris’s detail to 18 months through a private directive.
That protection was scheduled to last until July 2026.
Trump’s executive memorandum, issued Thursday to the Department of Homeland Security, directs that Harris’s security detail end on Monday. The decision comes as Harris prepares to embark on a national book tour for her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, set to be released next month.
Harris, who became the Democratic presidential nominee after Biden dropped out of the 2024 race, lost to Trump in a contentious election. The political climate has remained tense, especially after Trump survived two assassination attempts last year, prompting heightened security around current leaders.
Sources familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the revocation has not been publicly announced. Harris has not yet responded to the development.
A former California attorney general and San Francisco district attorney, Harris recently announced she will not seek the governorship next year. The removal of her protection, especially ahead of a public tour, has raised concerns among some observers about her safety and the potential politicization of security decisions. (AP)
