SHILLONG, Aug 30: The BJP, which has won a maximum of three seats in Meghalaya since its entry into the state’s political arena, has now set its sights on as many as 25 seats in the 2028 Assembly polls.
Speaking to media persons here after the State Executive Meeting of the party on Saturday, Assam MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa said that a study conducted by the party and inputs from party workers indicate that the BJP can win up to 25 seats in Meghalaya in future.
Admitting that there are some apprehensions in the minds of people about the BJP, he said those issues and concerns will be resolved by the party soon with the hard work of the party workers.
It may be mentioned that the BJP has failed to perform as per expectations, failing to improve on its tally of two seats despite being in power at the Centre since 2014.
While states like Assam, Manipur, Arunachal and Tripura have BJP governments, voters in Meghalaya have resisted BJP in the polls.
The MP also admitted that it would take some time for the party to reach the mark in Meghalaya even as he added that BJP had to work hard for a long time in Assam and Tripura to form the government.
Earlier, he said that the central government is sending a lot of funds to Meghalaya and insisted on a survey to find out if people were getting the benefits of the schemes or not.
BJP Spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said it was too early to comment on the party’s prospects in 2028, but mentioned that the party is busy reorganizing and strengthening itself in the state.
Asked about NPP taking credit for all the central schemes in Meghalaya, he said that the central government will not stop the schemes even if NPP was taking advantage of it.
Asked about allegations of nepotism in the implementation of central schemes in the state, he said that no concrete evidence has come up till now and if there are any such allegations, the state must inquire into those.
