GUWAHATI, Sept. 4: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “for ushering in one of the most consequential reforms in India’s GST structure.”
Sarma also lauded the GST Council for ensuring the changes and approving a major overhaul of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, simplifying the GST from the current four slabs – 5, 12, 18, 28 percent to two slabs – 5 and 18 per cent, effective from September 22.
“The new regime agreed will serve as a super booster for the Indian economy, bringing agility to small and medium businesses, spurring job creation, driving consumption, and most importantly, leaving more money in the hands of our people,” Sarma stated on social media.
“Having closely followed the evolution of GST over the last eight years, particularly during my tenure as Assam’s finance minister, I see this as a defining moment,” he said.
“India’s ability to successfully implement GST and also to adapt and reform – when required – is a shining testament to the Modi government’s firm yet flexible approach to governance,” the chief minister said.
Speaking to mediapersons, the chief minister said the move, which would be welcomed by one and all, would provide a huge relief to the middle class and economically disadvantaged people.
“The Prime Minister has reduced GST to zero on health insurance, life saving medicine, food items and others. Essential goods now see GST reduced from 12 percent to five percent. GST on cars, bikes, refrigerators and ACs cut from 28 percent to 18 percent,” he said.
“Earlier, there was income tax relief up to Rs 12 lakh, now with this GST exemption too, we can say that the Prime Minister is listening to the common man and ensuring real relief,” Sarma said.
