New Delhi, Sep 4: Watching the Indian Premier League (IPL) live from the stands will become more expensive, with the Centre increasing Goods and Services Tax (GST) on IPL tickets from 28 to 40 per cent.
As per ESPNCricinfo, a ticket with a base price of ₹1,000 will now cost between ₹1,280 and ₹1,400. The hike pushes IPL into India’s highest GST bracket, which already includes casinos and race clubs.
In contrast, international matches may see a reduction in ticket prices. Earlier, tickets for international games carried the same 28 per cent GST as IPL, but that slab has now been removed.
Under the revised system, “other recognised sporting events” will attract 18 per cent GST on tickets above ₹500, while those priced below remain exempt.
This means a ticket with a base price of ₹1,000 for an international fixture would now cost ₹1,180 instead of ₹1,280.
Similarly, state-run leagues could also benefit from the lower tax slab.
The new tax rates will come into effect from September 22, just days before the ICC Women’s World Cup kicks off in India.
Ticket sales for the tournament are yet to open, though the ICC has already invited fans to register for updates. (Agencies)
