SHILLONG, Sep 11: Looking to boost overall revenue and increase consumption, the Cabinet has approved the reclassification of IMFL brands, the introduction of a general brand category, and the revision of ad valorem on beer.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the Cabinet has also approved several amendments to the Meghalaya Excise (Amendment) Rules, 2025, including the amendment of Rule 44(12), Rule 372(1)(b), Rule 373, and Rule 374, as well as the insertion of a new Rule 71A and the introduction of Rule 41A.
He explained that the amendments are designed to restructure rates and pricing in order to enhance competitiveness with neighboring states. “This step is intended to align our pricing with market realities, thereby making us more attractive to consumers. As a result, we anticipate a rise in consumption, which is expected to contribute to higher overall revenue,” Sangma said.
According to government projections, the new amendments are expected to generate an additional Rs 90 crore in revenue.
