SHILLONG, Sep 13: The construction of the additional road from Shillong to Umroi Airport is still far from completion.
The project is being executed in two phases. The first phase, a 14-kilometre stretch taken up under North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), starts from the second kilometre of the Mawlai Bypass to Umjathang. The overall progress of this phase stands at 71 per cent.
On the other hand, the second phase, covering 5 kilometres under CRIF, stretches from Umjathang to the sixteenth kilometre of the Shillong Bypass. Work on this portion is ongoing, with 76 per cent progress achieved so far.
Meanwhile, the construction of a new road from Nongkohlew to New Shillong was sanctioned in February this year.
Titled ‘Construction of a Two-Lane Road from West Corridor, New Shillong Township, Mawpat, to Connect VIP Airport Road at Nongkohlew’, the 11-kilometre project has been allocated a budget of Rs 135 crore.
