OREM, Sep 15: The 22-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson, has been linked to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was a confidant of President Donald Trump after founding Turning Point USA.
DNA evidence found near Kirk’s assassination site matched that of the suspect, and investigators have also used DNA evidence to link Robinson with a screwdriver recovered from the rooftop where the fatal shot was fired.
Authorities in Utah are preparing to file capital murder charges against Robinson as early as Tuesday in the killing of Kirk, a dominant figure in conservative politics who became a confidant of President Donald Trump after founding Arizona-based Turning Point USA.
Officials have said Robinson carried a hatred for Kirk and ascribed to a “leftist ideology” that had grown in recent years.
Investigators recovered a note from Robinson that he had an opportunity to take out Kirk and was going to do it.
Authorities say Robinson has not been cooperating with law enforcement and that he may have been “radicalized” online.
Kirk’s vigil and moments of silence at professional sporting events have been observed, and Vice President JD Vance plans to serve as a substitute host for Kirk’s talk show on Rumble.
Tributes to Kirk continue across the country, with mourners wrapping around the Kennedy Centre in Washington and moments of silence at several professional sporting events. (AP)
