SHILLONG, Sep 16: With an aim to disseminate awareness on cleanliness, nutrition and environmental conservation, the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong, organised a special awareness programme at Hubert Memorial Higher Secondary School, Umpling, East Khasi Hills, on Tuesday.
According to a statement, the awareness programme, which was held as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva, Poshan Maah and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaigns, brought together students, teachers and community members.
Speaking on the occasion, principal of Hubert Memorial HS School, Julieta Lyngdoh Lungkhoi, appreciated CBC Shillong for giving students valuable exposure and encouraging collective participation. She said such initiatives impart knowledge beyond textbooks and urged students to become responsible citizens who care for their health, community and environment.
On the other hand, East Khasi Hills District Health Education Officer (DHEO), O. Sumer, stressed the role of nutrition in building a healthier society.
She pointed out that anaemia, especially among adolescent girls, is on the rise and highlighted the importance of consuming iron-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, pulses, jaggery, meat and other locally available produce.
She also encouraged regular health check-ups, deworming and awareness programmes to ensure timely detection and intervention. “A nourished body leads to an active mind,” she reminded students.
As part of the programme, art competitions were held under the themes of Swachhata and Nutrition, where students showcased their creativity through posters, drawings and slogans. A quiz competition was also conducted on the occasion.
Winners were awarded prizes, and certificates were presented to all participants.
Meanwhile, a plantation drive under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam was carried out on the school premises, followed by a pledge to maintain cleanliness, adopt a healthy diet and care for the environment.
Reflecting on the day’s activities, one student said, “Planting a tree today made me feel like I am giving something back to nature. I will remember this whenever I see it grow.”
Another student added, “I learned how important iron-rich food is for us. I will try to eat more vegetables and fruits at home so that I stay healthy and active in school.”
