SHILLONG, Sep 17: Tour Operator Alan West Kharkongor has filed a petition in the High Court of Meghalaya following the recent strike called by All Meghalaya Khasi Tourist Taxi Association (AMKTTA).
Kharkongor’s legal counsel, Phuyosa Yobin said they have sought urgent listing of the matter before the court which has agreed to hear the plea either on Friday or Monday.
According to Yobin, the petitioner has prayed to the court to issue a writ of mandamus directing the Meghalaya government to ensure that no strike, bandh, or blockade called by the AMKTTA or any other association is permitted to obstruct free movement of tourist taxis within Meghalaya.
They also prayed the court to restrain AMKTTA, its members, and affiliates from enforcing the proposed strike or from taking any coercive steps restricting the entry of tourist taxis from outside the state.
The petitioner also prayed before the court to direct the state government to engage with the AMKTTA and other stakeholders, and to evolve a fair and just mechanism ensuring meaningful participation of local taxi operators in the tourism sector without infringing upon the rights of others.
The petitioner has also prayed for framing appropriate guidelines/policy regulating tourist taxi services in the state, balancing the rights of local taxi owners and the larger interest of public order and tourism development
The petitioner has also made an interim prayer for ad interim order directing immediate call off the strike.
