Police kill 3 terrorists in Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Sep 17: At least three terrorists were killed and four injured in two separate incidents in Pakistan’s northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said on Wednesday. The terrorists attacked two police stations in Bannu and Karak districts on Tuesday, officials said, adding that both the attacks were successfully foiled by the police. In Bannu, terrorists first targeted the Miryan police station and later the Mazang checkpoint, which comes under the station’s jurisdiction. According to Regional Police Officer(RPO) Bannu, Sajjad Khan, the attack on Miryan police station was thwarted within 20 minutes. Later, dozens of terrorists armed with heavy weapons moved toward the Mazang checkpoint, where the gun battle lasted for about an hour. The RPO confirmed that three terrorists were killed and four injured, while their accomplices managed to carry away the dead and wounded. Three police personnel sustained minor injuries during the encounter. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, terrorists launched an assault on the Gurguri police station in Karak. District Police Officer (DPO) Karak said the attackers were prevented from advancing towards the station as security forces engaged them in an exchange of fire. (PTI)
Indian-origin surgeon gets 6 years in UK for sex offences
LONDON, Sep 17: An Indian-origin heart surgeon, Dr Amal Krishna Bose, has been jailed for six years for sexually assaulting female staff at a National Health Service (NHS) hospital in northern England. Bose was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault, including inappropriate touching and making sexualised comments to five female staff members at the Blackpool Victoria Hospital between 2017 and 2022. Lancashire Constabulary said he had been sentenced at Preston Crown Court after a jury found him guilty at the end of a trial in June. Bose denied the charges, claiming his actions were just “flirting” and “workplace banter.” The court heard that some of the women had taken time off sick due to Bose’s actions or even left their roles to avoid him. The victims’ statements were read to the court to assist the judge in reaching a sentence. (PTI)
Navalny’s widow: Lab reports confirm poisoning
MOSCOW, Sep 17: Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader, was found to have been poisoned shortly before his death in a Russian prison in February 2024. Navalny, who was serving a politically motivated 19-year sentence, died in the Arctic penal colony. His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, claims that biological samples from his body were tested at two independent labs abroad. Both labs concluded that Navalny had been poisoned but did not release their findings due to political considerations. Navalnaya has repeatedly blamed Putin for Navalny’s death, but Russian officials have denied this. Navalnaya disputed Russian officials’ version of events and claimed her husband had no instances of heart disease while alive. Navalny has challenged Russian authorities’ involvement in the incident.
