SHILLONG, Sep 19: The sudden demise of legendary singer, composer, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has cast a pall of grief across Shillong, with multiple organizations and cultural bodies paying their heartfelt tributes.
The Shillong Socio-Cultural Assamese Students’ Association (SSASA) described his passing as “an unbearable loss,” noting that Garg’s musical journey spanning over three decades had left an indelible mark on Indian music. Having recorded more than 38,000 songs in 40 languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi, Nepali, and several tribal languages of the Northeast, his contributions were hailed as a priceless legacy that enriched both Assamese identity and the cultural fabric of the nation.
SSASA announced that it will organise a condolence meet on Saturday at 4 pm at Asom Kristi Kendra, Dhankheti, Shillong, calling upon the Assamese community in the city to unite in honoring Dr Garg’s extraordinary legacy of music, spirit, and love for Assam.
Meanwhile, a condolence meeting was also held this evening at the Sankardev Cultural Centre’s Library in Shillong, where admirers, well-wishers, and members of the Centre gathered to offer floral tributes and recall the singer’s profound influence on generations of listeners.
The Shillong Mukul Sangha, a literary and socio-cultural organization, also convened a virtual meeting earlier in the day to express its deepest condolences. Members of the Sangha reflected on Garg’s immense contributions as a singer, composer, lyricist, actor, and filmmaker. They prayed for the eternal repose of his soul and extended sympathies to the bereaved family.
