SHILLONG, Sep 19: The recent reshuffle of the state cabinet is said to have stirred discontent within party ranks, with allegations ranging from sidelining MLAs to nepotism and internal power struggles.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, sources indicated that former Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh repeatedly ignored party workers and MLAs from across the state, attending to only a select few.
Insiders claimed that her family members and close aides influenced her decisions, effectively creating barriers for those outside her inner circle. This, the sources said, fostered the perception of nepotism, alienating her within party ranks.
On former Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, party insiders said he often delegated duties to his personal assistant, compelling MLAs and party members to interact indirectly.
Many reportedly felt humiliated by the process. This was cited as a major reason behind his removal.
The source added that the UDP was the principal force behind pressure for Paul’s exit, alleging that he consistently ignored party MLAs and workers.
Talking about newly-inducted Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, the source revealed that Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar is reportedly strengthening his foothold in Jaintia Hills.
Sources suggested that even requests from his brother, Ngaitlang Dhar, were ignored, particularly regarding the induction of Umroi MLA Damanbait Lamare into the ministry in place of Sosthenes Sohtun.
Observers indicated that Shylla’s influence extends beyond his department, aided by ministers aligned with him, pointing to a calculated expansion of political control.
According to the source, questions have emerged over the apparent silence of Deputy Chief Minister and NPP state president Prestone Tynsong.
The source said many had expected him to play a decisive role in safeguarding Khasi and Jaintia representation, but his inaction has fuelled speculation and unease within party ranks.
The reshuffle, insiders claim, reflects not just administrative changes but a deeper struggle for influence, with party workers and MLAs quietly reassessing their positions amid growing dissatisfaction.
