TURA, Sep 20: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has called for reforms in India’s education sector to align with the changing global landscape.
Addressing the 8th Foundation Day celebration of Tura Christian College (TCC) on Saturday as the chief guest, Sangma drew from his personal background as the son of teachers, remarking that “teachers are like blacksmiths, sharpening the brains of children and students.”
He said that education must prepare young people to adapt to an ever-evolving society and become fast movers in a competitive world.
He reflected on the growth stories of nations such as China and India, stressing the importance of collective responsibility among policymakers, parents and society in preparing children to embrace new opportunities.
The event was also attended by Registrar of Captain Williamson Sangma State University Ambrose Ch. Marak as the guest of honour, along with eminent personalities, civil society leaders, representatives of NGOs, church leaders, heads of colleges in Tura, senior citizens and the Nokma of Rongbakgre.
In his address, Marak congratulated the governing body and faculty of Tura Christian College for their achievements over the past eight years and called on the gathering to embrace the spirit of Ubuntu–humanity towards others–while working together for shared goals.
He further lauded the Leader of Opposition’s vision and described Tura Christian College as his brainchild.
Earlier, the programme began with a welcome address by vice president of the governing body, Beryl B. Sangma, who traced the institution’s journey since the establishment of Tura Christian Academy (Higher Secondary Section) in 2010.
He highlighted how the vision nurtured by Baptist church leaders two decades ago aimed not only at imparting education but also at upholding Christian ethics and values.
As part of the celebrations, two distinguished faculty members, Baldhora M. Sangma and Sungjungmenla, were felicitated with the Best Teacher Award for their dedication and service to the institution.
