34 killed in Gaza City by Israel before UN meeting

CAIRO, Sep 21: Israeli airstrikes overnight in Gaza City killed at least 34 people, including children and a nurse’s family, according to health officials at Shifa Hospital.
The strikes come ahead of the UN General Assembly, where countries including the UK, France, and Canada plan to recognise a Palestinian state.
Peace activists in Israel welcomed the move, calling for a ceasefire and hostage release.
Despite growing calls for peace, Israeli operations continue, with the military claiming to have killed a Hamas sniper—allegedly the brother of Shifa’s director, who denied the claim.
Over 65,000 people have died in Gaza in the 23-month conflict, with most of the population displaced and facing famine.
Israel is urging evacuations from Gaza City, but many Palestinians are unable or unwilling to flee.
Pope Leo XIV condemned the “forced exile” of Palestinians, while hostage families accused PM Netanyahu of endangering captives by refusing negotiations to end the war. (AP)
