SHILLONG, Sep 21: Harvest festival ‘Onam’ was celebrated with grandeur in Shillong on Sunday, drawing hundreds of Malayalee residents and well-wishers, as Governor CH Vijayashankar underscored the values of equality, unity and kindness that the festival embodies.
Extending his greetings, the Governor said Onam is not confined to Kerala alone but stands as a celebration of peace, prosperity and togetherness for all. He noted that what makes the festival socially unique is its inclusiveness, as people from all castes, creeds and religions participate without barriers.
He also remarked that the festival serves as a reminder of India’s cultural richness and the importance of collective harmony.
The celebrations were organised by the All India Malayalee Association, Meghalaya State Unit, along with Kalakaireli. Governor Vijayashankar was the chief guest, while East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah also joined the occasion.
The day-long event brought alive Kerala’s traditions through music, dance and cultural performances, with the highlight being the commemoration of King Mahabali’s reign of equality and prosperity.
On the occasion, the community felicitated TC Chacko, Rajeevan P, and Sister Rose Kayathinkara for their significant contributions to society.
The Governor stated that such cultural gatherings not only preserve traditions but also strengthen bonds of togetherness in a diverse country like India.
