Sanbor conveys condolence over Zubeen’s death on behalf of state

SHILLONG/TURA, Sep 22: Cabinet Minister and BJP MLA from South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai, in a letter to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, conveyed the mourning of Meghalaya and extended condolences over the demise of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, while recognising his inspiration to musicians and artists from the neighbouring state of Meghalaya.
Garg reportedly passed away during a scuba diving accident in Singapore on September 19.
“His (Zubeen) immense talent, passion and dedication to music have left an indelible mark on the country’s rich cultural heritage. Through his music, he built bridges across our states and brought the spirit of the Northeast to national and global audiences. Meghalaya joins Assam and the entire region in mourning this irreparable loss.
On behalf of Meghalya, Shullai extended condolences to Garg’s family, friends, colleagues, and innumerable admirers.
“His music has inspired many musicians and artists from the state of Meghalaya, who all mourn his loss,” he said in the letter.
Minority body’s tribute
Meanwhile, in Tura, the Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union (MKSU) on Sunday paid rich tribute to Garg at the Koch Cultural Centre cum Museum, Ghasura, Ampati, in South West Garo Hills.
The tribute to the Tura born legendary singer was held during the union’s general meeting where its new office-bearers and the executive committee were approved. The meeting also discussed various problems and issues concerning the Koch community, highlighting the need for collective efforts and active participation to resolve them.
The committee which was approved included general secretary Nobo Koch; joint secretaries Bireswar Koch, Bhomikanando Koch, and Bijoy Koch; and organising secretaries Dipu Koch, Sekor Koch, Nilkamal Koch, Amid Koch, Prarthona Koch, Hiron Koch, Himadri Koch, and Shanu Koch.
