Guwahati, Sept 24: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the DGP to constitute a special investigation team (SIT), comprising the best officers of Assam Police, to investigate the death of legendary singer and state’s cultural icon, Zubeen Garg.
Amid growing public anger and demands by fans for justice for their beloved singer, the chief minister also warned that the state government would “not spare anyone found to be involved” in the tragic incident that occurred at an island in Singapore where the singer was taken for a yacht outing on September 19.
“In regard to the untimely death of our beloved Zubeen Garg, we will not spare anyone. Today, I had a meeting with the DGP, Assam Police and the ADGP, CID, along with senior officers including the chief secretary, Assam,” Sarma said on Wednesday.
“I have instructed the DGP to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) with the best officers of Assam Police. The SIT will have full freedom to investigate the case with complete professional integrity,” the chief minister said.
He also informed that the viscera samples of the late singer would be sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL), Delhi, for a detailed examination.
Two post mortem examinations of the late singer, firstly at the Singapore General Hospital, and then at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, have already been conducted.
It may be mentioned here that there has been a growing public outrage and demands by fans, organisations and Opposition parties alike for a prompt investigation into the sudden death of the singer.
Questions and concerns among several quarters have been raised as to why the singer, who has had a history of seizure attacks in the past, was in the first place taken to Singapore, and thereafter for a yacht outing to an island there, and to swim in the sea, a day before he was to take part in the North East India Festival at Suntec City.
