GUWAHATI, Sept 25: Regional party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for a Supreme Court–monitored CBI inquiry into the “mysterious” death of Legendary singer Zubeen Garg.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, the party stated that the people of Assam don’t have complete faith in the neutrality of the CBI alone and that the investigation has to be carried out under the direct monitoring and supervision of the Supreme Court of India.
The regional party stated that the sudden demise of the cultural icon of Assam has plunged the people of the state, as well as music lovers across the globe, into deep grief, and at the same time, has created widespread anguish and resentment because of the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
“There is a strong perception among people that the investigation into the mysterious incident has not proceeded in the right direction. People have been agitating, raising their voices, and demanding a high-level inquiry, as they strongly suspect that either gross criminal negligence or a pre-planned conspiracy might be behind Zubeen Garg’s death,” the party leadership stated.
“In any case of suspicious or unnatural death, the legal procedure is clear: the accused must be arrested immediately to prevent evidence tampering and to ensure that witnesses are not influenced. Yet, even several days after the incident, no arrest has been made,” it stated.
“There is also the additional complexity that the incident occurred on foreign soil, in Singapore. The Assam Police or its CID branch does not have direct jurisdiction to investigate there. For any inquiry on foreign soil, the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India has to coordinate with the concerned authorities abroad,” the party stated.
“A CBI investigation, supported by the central government and conducted with international coordination, will be more competent and practical in such a case,” it stated.
“We most earnestly request you, on behalf of the Assamese people and the global community of Zubeen lovers, to take immediate steps to order a CBI investigation into the mysterious death of Zubeen Garg, and to ensure that the said enquiry is monitored by the Supreme Court of India. Only such an impartial and transparent investigation can restore public confidence and deliver justice to the departed soul,” it said.
