GUWAHATI, Sept. 25: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged people not to believe in rumours in connection with the death of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, and instead cooperate with the special investigation team (SIT) of the Assam Police, which is conducting a probe into the incident that occurred during a yacht trip in Singapore on September 19.
Notably, the SIT was reconstituted with nine police officers, led by SDGP, CID, M.P Gupta, to investigate the CID PS (police station) case number 18/2025 under Sections 61(2)/105/106(1) BNS, 2023 in a transparent and time-bound manner.
The chief minister had on Wednesday directed the DGP to constitute the SIT to probe the case.
“Every person, not just the chief organiser of the festival in Singapore, associated with the incident, will be investigated and interrogated by the SIT in detail. The post mortem report, the viscera examination report will be received and things will be clear in the next 10 to 15 days. So, I request the people of the state to cooperate with the SIT investigation and also stay away from rumours,” the chief minister informed mediapersons on Thursday.
Sarma however said that “instant justice” would not be possible as the court would have to proceed in the case with facts and evidence. “While we understand that people are grief-stricken to have lost their cultural icon in such a manner, there is a process to be followed by the court, which will decide on facts and not on emotions,” the chief minister said.
Assuring a proper investigation by the SIT, Sarma however said “if the CID is unable to unearth the facts in the case, the government will approach the CBI.”
Amid growing public anger and demands by fans for justice for their beloved singer, the chief minister had also warned that the state government would “not spare anyone found to be involved” in the tragic incident that occurred at an island in Singapore.
