MAWKYRWAT, Sep 25: The proposed allotment of 70 acres of agricultural land near the Mula river under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division to the Border Security Force (BSF) has now drawn the attention of the Synjuk ki Myntri Shnong of Hima Maharam, which has urged the Syiem of Hima Maharam to withdraw the proposal.
The Synjuk convened a meeting here on Thursday to deliberate on the proposal after sustained opposition from the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and other pressure groups, which have been holding public meetings almost daily in different villages under Hima Maharam Syiemship. They have voiced concern that while the children of the Hima struggle to find land for housing or farming, the Syiem’s plan seeks to hand over a large tract of agricultural land to the BSF.
Speaking to reporters, P Wanniang, president of the Synjuk ki Myntri Shnong of Hima Maharam, said the meeting discussed three key issues: the growing menace of drugs in the district, the land allotment proposal to the BSF, and the leasing of about 180 hectares of Raid land by the Syiemlieh Clan to the Kolkata-based Trum Supreme Company — a matter now locked in a legal battle between the Hima and the Syiemlieh Clan.
Regarding the BSF land allotment, he clarified that it was still at the proposal stage and had not moved forward.
