MAWKYRWAT, Sep 28: Acting Syiem of Hima Nobosohphoh Syiemship, Ferdinance Syiemiong, convened an emergency meeting of all Rangbah Shnongs at his office in Rangblang Pombriew on Saturday to discuss a recent incident in which unidentified miscreants set ablaze his Maruti Alto (registration number ML05M3148) while it was parked along the roadside at Rangblang Pombriew village, about 25 km from Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Bokstone Thongni, secretary of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong (SRS) of Nobosohphoh Syiemship, strongly condemned the act. He described the burning of the Syiem’s vehicle as a “savage act” and said the incident had brought embarrassment to the entire Hima, noting that it was the first time a Syiem’s vehicle had been targeted and destroyed by criminals.
Thongni acknowledged that, as the Syiem governing the Hima, Ferdinance Syiemiong might not be perfect and could have made mistakes, but stressed that disagreements should be resolved through dialogue rather than resorting to such unacceptable acts of violence.
He further stated that the SRS, during the meeting, urged law enforcement authorities to immediately investigate the matter and arrest those responsible, to ensure such crimes are curbed and do not recur in the future.
“The police should arrest and punish the culprits because it is very important for the Syiem to feel safe while discharging his duties, so that it does not affect his successors or the Rangbah Shnongs,” Thongni added.
