SHILLONG, Oct 3: The Meghalaya government is mulling over the idea of approaching the North Eastern Council (NEC) to start a Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) like UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) to boost the aerial connectivity among the Northeastern states.
As the matter is linked with the idea of connecting different Northeastern states, the Meghalaya government would move other NE states to approach the NEC jointly.
It may be mentioned that under the initial phase of UDAN, many flights were operating from Shillong to other Northeastern towns like Dimapur, Agartala, Silchar, Dibrugarh etc., at affordable prices, with subsidy provided by the government.
However, as soon as the agreed time period elapsed, these companies stopped their services.
Currently the Shillong Airport is only catering to a few places like Delhi, Aizawl, Lilabari, Imphal and Kolkata.
An official said if the NEC approves the proposal it would be a great boon for the people of Meghalaya.
