NONGPOH/SHILLONG, Oct 5: Just two days after four teenagers lost their lives after being mowed down by a speeding truck in Ri-Bhoi, two persons were killed in yet another fatal road accident on Sunday night, after a truck bearing registration number ML05 L 4368 collided with a Bolero vehicle belonging to the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Resubelpara.
The deceased were identified as Sanbirth M. Momin (Bolero driver) and Smart Sangma while the injured were identified as Nilkash M. Momin, truck driver Anil Dorjee and handyman Bibash Thapa.
According to reports, the accident occurred at around 8 pm along National Highway 6 near Umsawnongkharai in Ri-Bhoi District. The Bolero, bearing registration number ML01 7455, was reportedly travelling towards Shillong when the speeding truck, which was proceeding towards Guwahati, suddenly swerved across the lane of highway and crashed into it.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the Bolero was completely mangled, leading to the instant death of two male occupants, while the driver sustained grievous injuries. The truck also overturned following the crash.
Police personnel immediately rushed to the scene and have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Ri-Bhoi Senior Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore informed that the driver and the handyman of the truck which killed four teenage girls will be arrested soon.
Rathore said both the driver and the handyman are currently recuperating in hospital and will be arrested upon their discharge.
Preliminary information suggests that the truck (ML05 AC 8447) was travelling from Jowai towards Bhoirymbong and was driven by Ferlindes Rymbai (34) of Laitkor, East Khasi Hills, accompanied by Dwayne Dkhar (31) of Khliehtyrshi, West Jaintia Hills.
The deceased have been identified as Phibapyntngen Rynjah (13), Lashimti Nongrum (13), Theresa Nongrum (19), and Ridahunlang Nongrum (13). The lone survivor, identified as Iupharisa Nongrum (11), sustained serious injuries. All the victims were residents of Thadrang Madan village under Mawlasnai Police Outpost, Ri-Bhoi.
