NONGPOH, Oct 6: In a scene filled with grief, the bereaved families of two men from North Garo Hills who lost their lives in last night’s road accident at Umsawnongkharai arrived at Nongpoh Civil Hospital on Monday to take possession of the bodies.
The formalities were completed after the police, along with hospital authorities, carried out the necessary legal procedures. Before taking the bodies home for the final rites, the family members offered prayers in honour of the deceased, who met their untimely end in the tragic collision.
The two victims have been identified as Sanbirth M Momin, driver of District Sports Officer Linza Fenny Syiem, and Smart K Sangma, driver of District Agriculture Officer V Kharbuki, both serving under the North Garo Hills district administration.
According to sources, the deceased were on their way to Shillong to pick up their respective officers bound for Resubelpara when the vehicle they were travelling in was struck by a speeding truck heading towards Guwahati.
The truck was reportedly driven recklessly under the influence of alcohol and overspeeding by Anil Dorjee, aged 22, from 15 Mile Nongthymmai village in Ri-Bhoi district.
Upon learning of the tragic incident, both officers — Syiem and Kharbuki — immediately rushed to Nongpoh on Sunday night to coordinate with the police, doctors, and the bereaved families, offering their condolences and assistance.
