Senthilkumar, Chotrani advance in New York squash tournament
New Delhi, Oct 6: India’s Velavan Senthilkumar and Veer Chotrani advanced to the round of 16 in the Open Squash Classic, a $74,000 PSA Bronze event, in New York. Reigning national champion and world number 45 Senthilkumar defeated Pakistan’s Md Ashab Irfan 11-2, 11-8, 14-12 in the opening round on Sunday, while Chotrani rallied to beat compatriot Abhay Singh 6-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 in what was their first meeting on the tour. Ramit Tandon, the eighth seed, received a first-round bye. (PTI)
Indian men lose to Kazakhstan 6-20 in water polo at Asian Aquatics
Ahmedabad, Oct 6: Indian men’s water polo team went down 6-20 to Kazakhstan on day three of Asian Aquatics Championships (Water Polo and Artistic Swimming), here on Monday. For India, Bhagesh Kuthe scored three goals, while Uday Uttekar and Praveen Gopinathan contributed 1 apiece in a men’s Group B contest. For Kazakhstan, Baltabkuly Adil and Nedokontsev scored four goals each, while Tosoy Eduard netted thrice. Lamayev Maxim, Shakenov Murat, and Akimbay Aldiyar scored two goals apiece. Akhmetov Ruslan, Madimar Almat, and Bobrovskiy Mstislav contributed one each. In artistic swimming, Kazakhstan’s Karina Magrupova and Viktor Druzin secured the top spot in women’s and men’s solo free events, respectively. (PTI)
Prakaash, Hruthik, Tavish advance to next round at U-16 Fenesta Open
New Delhi, Oct 6: Prakaash Sarran, Hruthik Katakam and Tavish Pahwa recorded dominant wins in the boy U-16 singles event of the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship, here Monday. Sixth seed Hruthik beat Rudra Batham 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 10 minutes. Eighth seed Tavish delivered a composed performance to beat Gyansh Manchanda 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, top seed Prakaash Sarran of Karnataka also impressed in his outing, defeating Atharva Anant 6-1, 6-2. (PTI)
Lanka Premier League to feature Indian players
New Delhi, Oct 6: The organisers of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) on Monday announced that Indian cricketers will feature in the tournament for the first time when its sixth edition begins on December 1. This T20 event will feature 24 matches in total, including 20 league fixtures and 4 knockout games, spread across three premier venues – R. Premadasa, Colombo; Pallekele Stadium, Kandy; and Rangiri Dambulla Stadium, Dambulla. “For the very first time, Indian cricketers are expected to join the action, their names will be revelled soon, adding a whole new level of excitement for fans across the region,” a press release said. “The timing of this edition has been carefully chosen to ensure that players gain maximum exposure and high-quality match practice in the lead-up to a global cricketing year,” Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director, LPL, said.
