SHILLONG, Oct 7: A woman from Meghalaya recently shared her experiences of racial abuse in Delhi, describing how she faced two separate instances of abuse in a single day.
Posting on her Instagram account @__insolitude, she said the first incident occurred in Kamla Nagar, followed shortly by another inside a metro station.
She recounted that while walking through Kamla Nagar, a group of three to four men on a scooty allegedly directed a derogatory remark at her. She described feeling stunned and momentarily unable to process what she had heard, but continued her errands quietly.
Later, while on the metro, another man reportedly hurled a racial slur, calling her “Ching Chong China.”
She said she chose not to respond, remaining composed despite being targeted twice in the same day.
The post received widespread attention on social media, with many users expressing support. One user, neeraj__10, reportedly remarked on the kindness and warmth of Northeastern people, calling them among the most admirable individuals he had encountered.
Another, ritz_chakraborty, highlighted the inner and outer beauty of people from the Northeast and suggested that acts of hostility often stem from personal insecurities.
Several others echoed similar sentiments. Roopeshtambat noted that the individuals responsible appeared immature and advised the woman not to let the incidents affect her peace, praising the Northeast as a region of national pride with clean surroundings and remarkable communities. Meanwhile, rich_ngaihte observed that the actions of a few do not represent the broader population and reflected on how stereotypes about Northeastern people are often unfairly exaggerated abroad.
The incidents have renewed conversations on social media about the experiences of Northeastern communities in urban areas, emphasising the importance of empathy, awareness, and respect in everyday interactions.
