SHILLONG, Oct 8: Voice of the People Party’s (VPP) Mawlai legislator Brightstarwell Marbaniang on Wednesday urged Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla to allocate funds for the improvement of sports infrastructure.
He also urged the minister to make provisions for financial assistance to the sports clubs in the constituency.
In a memorandum submitted to Shylla, Marbaniang highlighted the urgent need to upgrade existing sports facilities and strengthen the support system for athletes, clubs, schools, and communities in Mawlai.
He drew the minister’s attention to the dilapidated condition of community-cum-indoor stadiums in Mawiong Umjapung and Nongpdeng, saying that these facilities need urgent repairs to make them safe and functional again.
Marbaniang further proposed the construction of a multi-purpose indoor sports complex, equipped for multiple disciplines such as badminton, table tennis, volleyball, and basketball and complete with audience seating, changing rooms, and other amenities. He said the absence of such a facility is hampering the growth of sports and limiting opportunities for local athletes.
The MLA stressed the development of football and athletics facilities, including a standard-size football field with floodlights, spectator stands, and an athletics track, to promote competitive sports at various levels.
To ensure sustainability, he called for regular financial assistance to local sports clubs, many of which are struggling with limited resources.
“Regular grants or subsidies are vital for these clubs to maintain their infrastructure and support young sporting talent,” Marbaniang said.
He further proposed the appointment of certified coaches in major disciplines like football, basketball, and athletics, along with annual talent identification camps to nurture young athletes from Mawlai and its surrounding areas.
Highlighting the importance of preserving the region’s cultural heritage, Marbaniang urged the government to allocate funds and spaces for traditional and indigenous games. He also sought support for the distribution and the maintenance of sports equipment in schools, clubs, and communities.
The MLA pointed out that although Mawlai has several playgrounds across localities such as Mawiong Rim, Mawiong Umjapung, Umthlong, Nongkwar, Mawroh, Mawkynroh, Umshing, Mawtawar, Umsaw, Nongkohlew, Mawsiatkhnam, and Umrynjah, most of them require immediate renovation and upgradation, including turf installation, drainage systems, and fencing.
Marbaniang added that these initiatives would not only promote health and well-being but also help nurture future sporting talents, particularly with the upcoming National Games in mind.
