Dahiya best placed Indian at tied 28th after round 1 of WATC golf
SINGAPORE, Oct 8: Rakshit Dahiya carded an even-par 72 in testing conditions to finish as the best-placed Indian at tied 28th in the opening round of the World Amateur Team Championship (WATC) for the Eisenhower Trophy here on Wednesday.The Delhi NCR Cup 2025 winner was seven strokes behind leader Hiroshi Hirahara Tai of Singapore at the Tanah Merah Country Club.Team India ended the opening day in tied 18th position among 36 nations in the overall standings.Part of the three-member team sent by the Indian Golf Union (IGU), Dahiya didn’t have a desired start to his WATC campaign, with bogeys on the second and fifth holes. But he made amends by having birdies on the 12th, 16th and 17th holes.However, a bogey on the finishing hole meant he slipped more than 10 places on the leaderboard.“I could have finished higher but nevertheless it is a decent start. The conditions were tough to say the least. But I managed to keep it at even-par. Tomorrow, I will focus more on avoiding as many mistakes as possible and keeping the ball on the right spot in the fairway,” Dahiya said.Another Indian, Deepak Yadav registered a modest card of one-over 73 to end in joint 35th position.Yadav sank a birdie on the first hole itself and then picked another shot on the sixth hole to end the front nine at two-under-par. He went up as high as three-under-par till the 11th hole before stumbling upon bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes in addition to a double bogey on the 15th for his eventual tally.Arin Ahuja also had a topsy-turvy round with two birdies and five bogeys that derailed his campaign. Bengaluru Open: Thangaraja moves into halfway lead in Rd 2
BENGALURU, Oct 8: Sri Lankan N. Thangaraja, the man in form with a winner and runner-up finish in the last three PGTI events, continued his golden run with a six-under 65 to move into the halfway lead on Day Two of the INR 1 crore Bengaluru Open 2025 being played at the Karnataka Golf Association (KGA) course in Bengaluru. Thangaraja (66-65), who was overnight tied third and one off the lead, totalled 11-under 131 after 36 holes to hold a one-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard. Viraj Madappa (65-67) of Kolkata, the overnight joint leader, fired a 67 in Round Two to slip one spot to second place at 10-under 132. Gurugram’s Manu Gandas shot a tournament low of 63 to climb 26 spots to third place at nine-under 133.Nepal’s Subash Tamang, the round one joint leader, dropped down to tied fourth at eight-under 134 as a result of his 69 on Wednesday. Subash was joined by Greater Noida’s Saptak Talwar (68) in tied fourth. Reigning champion Abhinav Lohan, who hails from the DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurugram, ended Day Two in tied 11th place at five-under 137.The highest-placed among the Bengaluru-based players were Manoj S. and Mari Muthu R., both of whom occupied tied 13th position at four-under 138. The cut came down at one-over 143. Fifty professionals and one amateur progressed to the next stage.Noida’s Kanav Chauhan was the only amateur to make the cut. He was placed tied 24th at two-under 140.Viraj Madappa, a winner on the PGTI earlier this year, came up with six birdies on his first 16 holes, which included three conversions from a range of 10 to 15 feet. Tennis: Parthsarthi, Akansha, Riddhi through into pre-quarters
NEW DELHI, Oct 8: Top seed Parthsarthi Arun Mundhe, Akansha Ghosh, and Riddhi Shinde continued their winning streak to reach the pre-quarterfinals of the National Tennis Championship in the Girls’ U-16 Singles category at the DLTA Complex in New Delhi on Wednesday. Parthsarthi faced a tough challenge at the beginning of the contest against Swanika Roy as the scores were levelled at 2-2 before the top seed rallied to win the next seven games with ferocious baseline play and notched up the victory by 9-2 to move into the next round of the tournament.Meanwhile, third-seed Akansha Ghosh defeated Keertama Rangineni also by the score-line of 9-2 to reach the round of 16. Akansha showcased her sublime skills against Keertama, winning six straight games to establish a significant lead and secure a comfortable victory.Riddhi Shinde caused an upset by defeating sixth seed Aashi Kashyap 9–4 to advance to the next round. Riddhi broke her opponent’s serve four times to take a commanding lead before sealing the victory.In the Girls’ U-14 category, Aniha Gavinolla upset seventh seed Eshitha Sriyala 9-5, while top seed Padma Rameshkumar defeated Shubhi Sharma 9-3 in the round-of-32 clash.On the other hand, in the Boys’ U-16 Singles category, top-seed Prakaash Sarran beat Saksham Bhansal 9-8 (7-1) in straight sets. Mumbai Meteors beat Delhi Toofans in Prime Volleyball League
HYDERABAD, Oct 8: Mumbai Meteors registered a 3-0 win in the Prime Volleyball League, defeating Delhi Toofans 15-12 15-10 15-11 here on Wednesday.Delhi’s Muhammad Jasim caught Meteors off guard with an ace serve, but Mumbai’s Abhinav Salar did even better to get an early super point.Despite Delhi’s safe defending, Shubham Chaudhary kept finding gaps to give Meteors attacking venom.Captain Amit Gulia put service pressure on Delhi to boost Mumbai’s attacks. Carlos Berrios won a super point for his side with a powerful spike but despite solid play, Delhi kept finding it hard to break down an in-form Mumbai.Leading from the front, the Toofans skipper Saqlain Tariq started pumping up his side. A successful review call brought the Toofans troops together. But Jesus Chourio’s powerful shot was shut down by Abhinav-led three-man block.Abhinav attained another ace serve to earn his side a super point as the Meteors took complete control of the game, with tremendous distribution from setter Om Lad Vasant who was adjudged the player-of-the-match.With game slipping out of hands, Chourio started using his power as Delhi started to compete.But the counter-attack proved too little, too late, as Mumbai, with controlled aggression, and tremendous blocking from foreigners Mathias Loftesnes and Petter Alstad Ostvik, sealed their third straight win without dropping a single set.
