WASHINGTON, Oct 9: US President Donald Trump has again claimed he played a decisive role in ending the recent conflict between India and Pakistan by threatening both nations with massive trade tariffs.
In a Fox News interview, Trump said his ability to use trade and tariffs as diplomatic tools helped stop the fighting between the two nuclear-armed countries, stating, “Within 24 hours, I had a peace deal.”
He claimed to have warned both sides that the US would halt all trade unless they ended hostilities.
The conflict in question followed India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7, launched in response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam.
India and Pakistan agreed to cease hostilities on May 10 after several days of cross-border strikes.
However, India has maintained that the ceasefire was the result of direct military talks between the two nations’ Directors General of Military Operations, with no mention of US involvement.
Trump also boasted of brokering peace in seven global conflicts, including those involving Israel, Iran, Egypt, and Armenia, often through trade threats.
He described these efforts as having “saved millions of lives” and brought “peace to the world.” (PTI)
