SHILLONG, Oct 10: In a major development, Hima Mylliem has agreed to allocate land for the construction of a 600-metre link road that will connect to the Shillong Peak Viewpoint.
The proposal, pending since 2018, aims to improve access for tourists and local shop owners who currently have to pass through the Eastern Air Command (EAC) gate to reach the popular destination.
A team led by Laban-Mawprem MDC, Ricky Shullai, conducted a joint inspection of the proposed site on Friday, accompanied by representatives of the Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun, officials of the KHADC and other stakeholders.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection near the EAC entrance, Shullai informed that the Myntri of Hima Mylliem, deputed by the Syiem, Ainam Manik Syiem, has assured full cooperation for the project.
“The Myntri has given an assurance that they will soon send an approval letter to the District Council. Once we receive the Council’s approval, the Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun will obtain the NOC and forward it to the state government for further action,” he said.
Shullai expressed optimism that the new road, once completed, would greatly benefit the people of the area, including local residents, traders, and tourists.
“This is a long-pending project, and we are hopeful that it will finally see the light of day. It will not only help those whose livelihood depends on this route but also boost tourism and improve connectivity,” he added.
The proposed link road will facilitate the construction of an alternative route connecting Laitkor Peak near Woodland Nursing School.
The MDC also noted that the Air Force authorities, who manage the EAC area, often restrict public movement through the existing route due to security reasons.
He cited instances such as the Pathankot incident three months ago and the COVID-19 pandemic, during which public access was restricted for over two and a half years.
“Whenever there are national security concerns, the Eastern Air Command has to close the area for public safety, which we fully respect. This link road will help avoid such disruptions in the future,” he said.
According to Shullai, at least three deputy commissioners have been involved in facilitating the project over the years.
He also informed that the Myntri of Hima Mylliem has assured to meet again with the state government to discuss the sanctioned amount, the Forest department’s NOC and other clearances required to move the project forward.
“I am hopeful that there will be no more hurdles and that the Executive Committee will soon approve the NOC for the construction of this link road,” the MDC added.
