Harry, Meghan urge families against toxic social media
NEW YORK, Oct 10: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle urged parents to confront social media companies that exploit children through harmful algorithms, exacerbated by the “explosion of unregulated artificial intelligence.”
At a gala for Project Healthy Minds, they cited a ParentsTogether study revealing that researchers posing as children encountered detrimental interactions every five minutes with AI chatbots, asserting that such harmful content stemmed from the companies’ own policies.
They announced that their foundation would collaborate with ParentsTogether to enhance online safety, emphasizing that families are not isolated in their struggles.
The couple has prioritized youth mental health through the Archewell Foundation, which they founded in 2020, focusing on creating safer digital environments and supporting youth organizations addressing online harm.
Prince Harry highlighted the urgent need for accountability from powerful social media firms amid a mental health epidemic marked by anxiety, depression, and social isolation, particularly among young people who face risks like cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.
The issue is personally resonant for Markle, who has openly discussed her mental health challenges stemming from media scrutiny, while Prince Harry’s life has also been heavily monitored by the tabloids.
At an event for men’s health nonprofit Movember, he talked about tackling loneliness and the belief that no one would understand one’s struggles, a recurring theme in his discussions with men about mental health.
Project Healthy Minds’ CEO, Phil Schermer, noted that figures like Harry and Meghan play a crucial role in mental health advocacy, encouraging audiences to seek help.
However, he cautioned that celebrity inspiration must be coupled with partnerships with credible organizations for effective support.
The gala raised funds to enhance service options for mental health care, promoting user-friendly access similar to travel planning sites.
Also honored was Kalen Jackson, co-owner of the Indianapolis Colts, who advocates for mental health initiatives following personal tragedy.
The event spotlighted the importance of destigmatizing mental health struggles and fostering a culture of openness and vulnerability, reinforcing the notion that sharing personal stories can empower others in their journeys. (AP)
