MAWKYRWAT, Oct 12: In spite of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s assurance that the state government will oppose any attempt to mine uranium, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Sunday demanded tangible actions from the MDA Government, including convening a special session of the Assembly to pass a resolution against uranium mining in Meghalaya.
At a public meeting in South West Khasi Hills District, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem criticised the government’s failure to fulfill promises, highlighting a recent Office Memorandum from the MoEFCC that exempts public hearings before uranium extraction.
Synrem called for an immediate special session where all MLAs should unanimously resolve against uranium mining in Meghalaya.
He stressed that the government must send a strong message to the Centre, either by convening the special session or formally communicating its opposition to uranium mining.
He expressed concern that without protests, local health and the environment could suffer if uranium mining proceeds, as landowners may succumb to monetary offers.
Synrem urged ongoing resistance against uranium mining to be passed down through generations.
