SHILLONG, Oct 13: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday led a two-minute silence in memory of the two minors from Nongrah who lost their lives in recent tragic incidents, urging collective vigilance and responsibility to ensure safety of children.
The chief minister was attending a programme organised by the Social Welfare Department to mark the International Day of the Girl Child 2025 under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead” at the Lariti Auditorium, Mawkasiang.
In his keynote address, Sangma stressed the importance of safeguarding every child—both boys and girls—and ensuring their well-being within communities.
“Together, we need to see that the safety of every child is taken care of in our state and society. I have engaged in a series of discussions with self-help groups, faith-based organisations, NGOs, and communities to make our cities and towns safer for our children,” Sangma said.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to strengthen safety infrastructure, he said discussions are under way for the installation of CCTV cameras in key areas to enhance public safety and protect lives.
“It is really sad that the lives of our innocent children have been lost,” he added, reiterating the government’s commitment to prevention and protection measures.
The programme also saw the felicitation of young achievers in academics, sports, entrepreneurship, and community service — recognising their courage, determination, and leadership as role models for their peers.
Among those in attendance were Adviser to the Social Welfare Department Paul Lyngdoh, East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, senior government officials, representatives of partner organisations, heads of educational institutions, and over 500 students from 50 schools.
