SHILLONG, Oct 15: Talks between Assam and Meghalaya to resolve their border dispute in the remaining six areas will take place after the Assembly elections in Assam, due early next year.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma told reporters on Wednesday that both states will have to wait till the Assam elections are over.
Lapangap in West Jaintia Hills district continues to remain tense following the recent border skirmish that left one person from West Karbi Anglong district dead. The incident occurred during paddy harvesting in an area claimed by both states.
Earlier, the residents of Lapangap had met Sangma, urging him to allow them to continue with their harvesting activities.
The Chief Minister on Wednesday said tension continues to prevail in the area. He said although harvesting is important for farmers, safety and security of people are equally important.
“Even if we may be able to provide sufficient manpower but these kinds of incidents cannot be completely under our control. We don’t want any unfortunate incident which will only escalate tension. In order to avoid any situation, we have urged the villagers to maintain restraint and be patient,” he said.
Sangma also stated that after a series of discussions held following the incident, the government is expecting the situation to improve.
Stating that the incident surprised the police forces of both states as it occurred far away from where people had gathered for discussions, he said this may not be a good time to instigate further.
“We appeal to people to restrain and allow peace to prevail. We are engaging with stakeholders to find out a way and resolve the issue but till then, it will be advisable that we do not go ahead with any activity that foments tension,” Sangma said.
