SHILLONG, Oct 15: The Meghalaya Congress, spearheaded by its youth and women’s wings, staged a peaceful demonstration in Shillong on Wednesday condemning the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) following serious allegations of sexual assault reportedly linked to its members.
The protest also sought justice for Anandu Aji from Kottayam, whose death by suicide, the Congress alleged, stemmed from sustained harassment and abuse.
Leading the demonstration were Meghalaya Youth Congress president Timjim K Momin, Indian Youth Congress general secretary Tarh Johny, and Meghalaya Mahila Congress president Joplyn Shylla. Several office bearers and members of the party joined the protest, which called for accountability, transparency, and justice for the victims.
In a strong statement, the Meghalaya Youth Congress condemned the RSS and demanded that the allegations of sexual misconduct involving its affiliates be investigated through an independent and impartial probe. “Those responsible must be held accountable, irrespective of their political or organisational ties,” the party said.
The Congress leaders maintained that silence and inaction in the face of such grave allegations undermine public faith in institutions and erode the moral fabric of society. The demonstrators also criticised what they described as a growing culture of impunity among certain groups shielded by political influence.
Wednesday’s protest, the leaders said, formed part of the Indian National Congress’s broader movement to defend the rights, dignity, and safety of individuals—particularly women and young people—across India.
