SHILLONG, Oct 16: The names of Ethan War Kharmalki, IAS (Retd), and Advocate Treiborlang Jyrwa have been suggested as members of a three-member committee constituted to ascertain the current position and status of weighbridges and weigh pads in the state and to determine whether they are all functional.
The suggestions were made pursuant to an earlier direction of the High Court. Counsel for the petitioner agreed with the names proposed by Advocate General Amit Kumar.
In addition, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice W Diengdoh nominated the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of the State Legal Services Authority as the third member of the committee.
The three-member committee has been directed to submit its report within four weeks from today. The matter has been adjourned to November 24.
The High Court constituted the committee in connection with a public interest litigation (PIL) alleging illegal activities by government officials in collusion with cargo operators in the operation of weighbridges.
