SHILLONG, Oct 17: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Friday announced that the State Cabinet is aiming to finalise the restructuring of the teaching cadre into two categories—Grant-in-Aid and Government Salary—by December 2025.
Rymbui made the announcement while attending the Silver Jubilee celebration of Mang Hai Ryum Higher Secondary School, Amlarem, West Jaintia Hills, held under the theme ‘By God’s Grace We Stand, For His Glory We Grow’.
In his address, the education minister lauded the school for its perseverance and growth over the years, stating that it had “stood the test of time, overcoming challenges through grit, determination, and faith.”
He also praised the humility and dedication of the founder’s family, adding, “If even 10% of the 55,000 teachers in the state shared the same vision and mission, Meghalaya’s education system would be transformed.”
Expressing concern over the declining enrolment in several government schools within the Amlarem Sub-Division, Rymbui urged community leaders to take greater responsibility in supporting educational reforms and strengthening local institutions.
During the celebration, the education minister also announced several developmental initiatives for the school—including ₹15 lakh under the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF), ₹10 lakh for infrastructure enhancement and two Maruti Eeco vans for student transport.
He assured that the work orders for these projects would be formally handed over during Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s upcoming visit to Amlarem on November 12, 2025, during the 50 years’ celebration of Amlarem Sub-Division.
Earlier in the programme, school principal Tyrmei Chynnam Pamthied expressed gratitude to God for the school’s 25-year journey, reflecting on its humble beginnings in a tin-roofed classroom and its recent 100% pass rate in the 2025 SSLC examination.
Paying tribute to his late mother and founder, (L) Aiom Pyngngad Pamthied, he described her as a tireless worker who helped students regardless of their financial condition.
The event also featured cultural performances showcasing the rich heritage of Meghalaya.
On the occasion, awards were also presented to long-serving teachers, academic achievers and current contributing staff.
