Book on Bengali community’s contribution to Singapore’s multicultural heritage launched
Singapore, Oct 17: A book highlighting the Bengali community’s long-standing contribution to Singapore’s multicultural heritage was launched in the city-state.
Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Dinesh Vasu Dash on Thursday launched the book, Echoes of Bengal in the Lion City – Glimpses of the Bengali Diaspora in Singapore, published by the Tagore Society.
The anthology traces the history of the Bengali community in Singapore through literature, music, film, and the arts.
The Bengalis from the undivided Bengal before the partition of India were among the early settlers here.
The event highlighted the long, rich, and often overlooked presence of the Bengali community in Singapore, celebrating their contributions to the city-state’s multicultural heritage.
“The Tagore Society has used various art forms to foster intercultural understanding and enrich our national tapestry. Their work ensures that lesser-known stories also take centre stage in our collective heritage,” Dinesh was quoted as saying at the launch by local weekly Tabla! A documentary screened at the launch paid tribute to early Bengali pioneers whose resilience helped shape the nation’s social fabric. (PTI)
Trump plans to leave his mark on Washington by building a Paris-like arch near the Lincoln Memorial
Washington, Oct 17: US President Donald Trump wants to leave his mark on the nation’s capital by building a Paris-style arch just west of the Lincoln Memorial.
Trump unveiled the plan at a White House dinner on Wednesday for the wealthy businesspeople who have pledged money toward the $250 million cost of adding a massive ballroom to the Executive Mansion. Trump did not put a price tag on the cost of the arch.
“It’s going to be really beautiful,” the Republican president said. “I think it’s going to be fantastic.”
Many presidents and first families try to leave their imprint on the White House, and Trump is already doing that with many of the design and construction changes he has made to the property, perhaps most notably by converting the Rose Garden into a stone-covered patio. (AP)
