SHILLONG, Oct 18: In a move to modernise and expand Meghalaya’s piggery sector, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held discussions with officials from the French Embassy, representatives of Cooperl— a leading French integrated pork producer—and officers from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department.
The meeting focused on exploring collaboration in advanced scientific pig breeding and developing the entire piggery value chain to boost productivity and improve farmers’ income.
Cooperl, which has extensive global experience in sustainable pork production and value chain management, shared insights into how its integrated model could be adapted to Meghalaya’s local conditions.
The discussion aimed at identifying scientific and technical interventions that could make pig farming more efficient and commercially viable. The proposed partnership seeks to introduce advanced breeding practices, strengthen infrastructure and promote sustainable methods that would enhance the quality and output of Meghalaya’s piggery sector.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the initiative is part of the government’s larger effort to empower piggery farmers and strengthen the livestock economy through technology-driven, climate-resilient and value-based interventions.
