Guwahati, Oct. 20: The ruling BJP in Assam has urged political parties in the state to refrain from indulging in petty politics over legendary singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg’s demise.

Addressing the media here on Monday, Assam BJP spokesperson Kishor Kumar Bhattacharyya appealed to all political parties, as well as social and ethnic organisations of the state, not to indulge in making political capital out of Garg’s death and instead unite solely for the cause of justice.

“Justice for the singer can only be delivered by the judiciary, the most powerful and independent institution in the world. We must, therefore, place our unwavering faith in the strength and sanctity of India’s judicial system. For true justice to prevail, the investigating agencies must conduct a meticulous, transparent, and water-tight inquiry, collecting irrefutable evidence to be presented before the court,” Bhattacharyya said.

“To gather such conclusive proof, both the investigation team and the judicial commission require due time and we, as citizens, must wait with patience and faith until that process is fulfilled,” he said.

The BJP spokesperson stated that respecting public sentiment, the state government has already taken significant steps to accelerate the justice process, including the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) and a judicial inquiry commission, besides necessary arrangements for conducting the trial in a fast-track court.

“Furthermore, honouring the appeal of Zubeen Garg’s family and fans, and in order to eliminate every shadow of doubt surrounding the cause of death, a second postmortem of the late artiste’s mortal remains has been conducted. Having completed all procedural formalities, a team from the SIT has reached Singapore today to continue its investigation there,” he said.

“The BJP reiterates, with unshakable conviction, that no individual found guilty in connection with Garg’s death will escape the arm of justice. Zubeen Garg is not merely an individual he is a national treasure of Assam. To politicise his death is an act of deep moral wrong,” Bhattacharyya said.

“Yet, the Opposition parties of the state, instead of assisting the ongoing investigation, are attempting to obstruct the process through irresponsible statements, and worse, are shamelessly exploiting the emotional anguish of Zubeen’s admirers as political currency dreaming vainly of seizing power in the upcoming elections,” he said.

“The Assam BJP condemns this mentality of the Opposition in the strongest possible terms and calls upon every conscientious citizen to stand united for truth, justice, and the immortal legacy of Zubeen Garg,” the party spokesperson said.
