SHILLONG, Oct 21: Rajabala MLA Dr Mizanur Rahman Kazi has sought Chief Minister Conrad Sangma intervention into alleged irregularities during an eviction drive conducted at Rajabala Bazar by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) authorities in collaboration with certain NGOs. In his letter, the MLA stated that serious concerns had emerged regarding the fairness and transparency of the operation, which reportedly led to public resentment and distrust. He noted that during his visit to the site on October 18, he received numerous complaints from affected residents and stakeholders alleging multiple procedural lapses.
According to Kazi, the eviction drive was carried out without adequate prior notice and allegedly involved disproportionate use of force, selective targeting of individuals, and intentional damage to properties. He further claimed that the operation did not adhere to established legal protocols, raising questions about the protection of citizens’ rights.
The legislator warned that such actions, if left unaddressed, could aggravate social tensions in Rajabala, an area known for its demographic diversity and sensitivity.
Kazi urged the Chief Minister’s Office to order an impartial inquiry into the alleged irregularities by constituting a high-level committee to examine the actions of GHADC officials and the NGOs involved. He also sought appropriate redressal and compensation for those affected.
Emphasising the need to restore public faith in governance, he expressed confidence that the Chief Minister would ensure a fair and speedy resolution in keeping with the principles of equity and rule of law.
