SHILLONG, Oct 21: Nongpoh MLA, Mayralborn Syiem, has voiced satisfaction over the progress made in the construction of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road, a key infrastructure project linking several villages in Ri-Bhoi.
During an interaction with the media on Tuesday, Syiem noted that work on the first 20 kilometres of the road, funded by the state government, was advancing well. He indicated that the stretch was expected to be completed by early 2026, most likely between January and February.
He, however, pointed out that the subsequent 38-kilometre section of the road, implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), was witnessing slower progress. To address this, the MLA said a review meeting with the contractor would be convened once the rains subside to accelerate the pace of work.
Turning his attention to commuter safety, Syiem underscored the need for disciplined driving on the route once it becomes operational.
He cautioned motorists against reckless speeding and appealed to both private and commercial vehicle drivers to strictly follow traffic norms.
He also reminded two-wheeler riders to wear helmets consistently, stressing that a good road should never tempt one into ignoring safety measures.
Syiem maintained that while the improved connectivity would be a welcome change, the real success of the project would be measured by how responsibly commuters use it.
