SHILLONG, Oct 22: The National People’s Party (NPP) is prioritising the winnability of intending candidates over their loyalty as it prepares for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
The party has already invited applications from those wishing to contest the elections on an NPP ticket.
NPP Working President Marcuise Marak said that the selection of candidates would largely depend on inputs and feedback from grassroots party workers.
“We will also conduct our own research to ensure that we select the most capable candidates,” Marak said.
According to him, while loyalty will be taken into account, the primary criterion for candidate selection will be winnability. He added that the party has formed a committee to finalize the list of candidates.
Marak further informed that various committees have been directed to meet every weekend to review responses, and that a large number of aspirants have already expressed interest in seeking an NPP ticket.
He also stated that the recent controversy over the pending salaries of GHADC employees will not affect the party’s prospects, as the government has almost resolved the issue.
Admitting that politics played a role in the matter, Marak said that employees are now satisfied and many have resumed work.
